've been a long-time Bluehost web hosting
service customer, and still am. However, I wanted to open a hosting
account with another web host to expand the accounts on which my many
websites are hosted. I researched the many web hosting services
available and settled on HostGator. This HostGator review explains why I
chose HostGator for a second hosting service.
HostGator's Customer Service
I'm
not extremely technical with servers and web hosting. I require help
with this stuff and so I tested HostGator with a series of customer
service questions before deciding to sign up with HostGator. I called
them and used their live chat service. I wasn't on hold on the
telephone for more than 5 or 10 minutes (a little longer than Bluehost
generally). 5 to 10 minutes was acceptable.
What I particularly liked about calling HostGator is you're kept up-to-date with the expected waiting time remaining.
The
HostGator live chat service is great. When you post your question,
you're told in the message box how many operators are working and how
many people are in front of you. The line moves fast. I've had 18
people in front of me, but only waited a couple of minutes for the next
operator. Being kept up-to-date is a very nice feature.
With both
the telephone and live chat customer service, I never felt I was given
stock answers. In some cases the operator would tell me they needed to
look into the matter further, and took the time to get me the answer. I
appreciated this. They never once gave me a stock answer in an attempt
to brush me off.
After signing up with HostGator
We've
all used services where sales is very helpful, but once you sign up
(and hand over your money) customer service suffers. Not so with
HostGator. After I signed up, as a result of an error on my part, I had
an issue with a credit card on my account when a new card was issued
and had to switch cards. Anyway, the issue was on my end and the folks
at HostGator took more than 20 minutes on the telephone to get my
account operating smoothly.
I've since submitted several
information and assistance requests through live chat, and again was
never rebuffed. Regardless of the complexity of my question, I was
assisted.
HostGator has a very easy-to-use interface
Once
HostGator passed my customer service tests, I checked out their Cpanel
(the user interface) to see if it was as easy-to-use as Bluehost.
HostGator gives you the chance to do a CPanel demo on their site before
signing up. I was pleasantly surprised to see it's very similar to the
Bluehost set up (which is pretty easy to use).
Customer service is just the beginning
Customer and technical service is important (very important to
me). But you also need the right set of features and offerings in order
to make signing up with a Web hosting service the right thing to do.
